“A little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down, the medicine go down….” The authors of Super Grammar know that grammar is a difficult pill to swallow, but it is an essential medicine nonetheless if we are to communicate effectively. What will make grammar easier? They ponder. Aha! Heroes and villains (super heroes and super villains, really) who fight the good fight for grammatically correct, concise, and structured writing. What a fantastic concept.

The heroes are many, and they come in teams: the Completion Team (parts of a sentence), the Amazing Eight (parts of speech) and the Super Symbols (punctuation marks). This introduces the reader to the fact that grammar is not one large, incomprehensible lump, but is divided into smaller parts. Each team has its own color, and the pages are color-coded. Teachers can build read aloud activities and lesson plans around teams.

But no story worth its salt would be complete without villains. Enter the Sabotage Squad — the super villains who are out to destruct and destroy all correct sentences. So there you have it: the battle between superheroes and super villains for the ownership of all good communication. What fourth or fifth grade reader can resist?

To top it all are the bold, brightly colored illustrations and comic-book style panels. Explanation and entertainment are perfectly balanced in this almost comic-book grammar tome. Should become a part of all elementary and middle school classrooms.
